THE GIRLIZM+ CAMPAIGN

The Girlizm+ Campaign is a project that tackles the issues within mainstream feminism, being that the feminist movement has primarily highlighted the experiences of white, middle-class, heterosexual women, while womanism concerns the experiences of women of colour in their respective cultures and works to become more family and community-centred. 'Girlizm' is a term that has been derived from the root of 'womanism'; Because we are a community of young individuals, Cheetahs For Change feels strongly about using this specified term to connect with our audience that much more.

The term of "Girlizm+" includes but is certainly not exclusive to transgendered and cisgendered women and men, gender non-conforming, and non-binary people of our community, as the campaign is meant to amplify segregated groups to promote equity against gender and societal norms and expectations.

The term 'womanism' was first used in 1863 according to the Oxford English Dictionary, however, African-American author Alice Walker popularized the term when used in her 1983 collection of essays, In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens: prose

As this is an ongoing campaign, Cheetahs for Change is working hard to complete many meaningful projects relating to Girlism and empowering our female students here at CPA, as well as helping and uplifting other women in our community.

Our plans include:

- What it means to be a girl at CPA

- Women in STEM: Behind the Inventions

- Female hygiene product donation drive

- Class-to-class workshops
